Cartography: Layered Marbled Ceramic Vessel
This piece started as an experiment in layering and quickly became something I couldn't stop looking at. The way the marbled patterns flow through each section reminds me of old maps - those beautiful, hand-drawn charts where you can trace coastlines and follow rivers. My grandparents always had a map displayed on their wall with pins marking all of their travels, and I think there's a bit of that wandering spirit flowing through this piece.
Standing 12 inches tall, this vessel is built in layers of marbled clay, each one unique and flowing into the next. Between each matte marbled section, I've added bands of glossy white glaze that catch the light and create clean breaks.
Handcrafted in my Savannah studio. The interior is fully glazed for fresh flowers, and the matte sections are finished with mineral oil for protection and to bring out the natural beauty of the clay. One-of-a-kind piece.
